Mahogany is a new wood here at The Wooden Gem! It is such a beautiful hardwood with so many unique qualities. The natural colour of Mahogany wood is so vibrant it is hard not to catch the eye of a passerby! And, with regular oiling, the Resolute Platter will hold its colour for many years!
Mahogany wood is from Central or South America. Otherwise known as Honduras Mahogany, South American Mahogany, American Mahogany or Genuine Mahogany. This incredible hardwood was originally harvested from Honduras; however, during the twentieth century, Brazil provided most of the Mahogany material. Most current hardwood stock comes from Peru or Central America.Mahogany ranks among the finest wood in the world. Its working characteristics are outstanding when cutting, spokeshaving, turning, and sanding.

How To Best Maintain Your Wooden Serving Platter
- Wash your wooden serving platter in warm soapy water. Rinse the board and dry it with a soft cloth.
- Fill a large bowl with hot water. Place a bottle of mineral oil into the bowl and let it sit for about 10 minutes or until the bottle feels warm to the touch.
- Apply a generous amount of the warmed mineral oil onto a soft cloth. Wipe the mineral oil across the entire surface of your wooden charcuterie board.
- Let the mineral oil soak into the wooden serving board for approximately six hours. Remove any excess oil with a soft cloth.

Sapele is a timber originating from tropical Africa and grows to incredible dimensions; up to a height of 45m and a diameter of 10m. It is harder and heavier than African mahogany, weighing about 640kg/m3 when dried. This wood can also range from the Ivory Coast to the Cameroons and eastward through Zaire to Uganda. Its working characteristics are outstanding when cutting, spokeshaving, turning, and sanding making it a steady force for all things woodwork, here at The Wooden Gem.
