Maple chopping boards with intricate design take skill and focus above all else
Carving a handle into a chopping board with hand tools requires patience and precision. Here’s our guide to getting that perfect finished product.
Choose Your Tools & Materials Wisely
Choosing your hardwood of choice is a very personal decision. what wood, matches your interior the best. Perhaps you wish for the wood to complement other wooden statements in your kitchen. Each reason is valid and an important decision that will make your interior shine through. The hardwoods we recommend here at The Wooden Gem are Arctic Maple, Black Walnut, White oak and Iroko – a beautiful African Teak hardwood.
Marking out your design
From the very beginning, we have loved the organic approach to design, there is no flashy tech here at The Wooden Gem. Our design approach is still very much doodling with pen and paper. Being traditional at heart this feels more natural and really gets the creative juices flowing. Our Pebble was designed from this very approach and still to this day is our best seller!
Sharp tools are paramount for top-quality craftsmanship
Oil Stones use oil as a lubricant which can be timely but is durable none-the-less
Water Stones require water as a lubricant, this approach is faster cutting through material but can wear down very quickly.
Diamond Stones on the other hand are very durable, cut fast and stay flat for much longer, saving you money in the long run.
Honing Guides for true and accurate sharpening
Honing guides really help to maintain consistent bevel angles when sharpening chisels and plane blades.
Strop & Stropping Compound for sharpening with polish and precision.
A leather strop with a polishing compound refines edges and removes burrs. To do this a leather strip is used to polish the edge of a chisel, plane iron or knife. Stropping is the final part of the sharpening process to achieve a truly sharp edge.
Grinding Wheel to save time
Whether it be manual or powered, a grinding stone is great for reshaping edges but should be used carefully to avoid overheating. This for us doesn’t have the hands-on approach that perhaps manual grinding on a wetstone does. But each to their own!
Sanding until your hearts content
Sanding with grits ranging from 80 to 400 is essential for the finish our customers have grown to expect. So, what more is there to say, but sand, sand, and more sanding!
The perfect finish makes for the perfect product
Beeswax and food-safe mineral oil are all we use here at The Wooden Gem. We believe there is no need for nasties or toxic finishes on wooden products. Organic finishes are best so we aim to stick to this for all of our handmade wooden products. The prominence board is finished with a careful balance of these two natural oils and waxes to ensure a buttery smooth finish! I feel the best way for me to feel content in what I am doing, is to give back in some way. So, for every order made, The Wooden Gem will be purchasing and planting a tree. The Woodland Trust will be my go-to, to ensure The Wooden Gem customers are at ease with purchasing wooden goods from me for years to come.
