Welcome To My Journey!

The Wooden Gem has allowed me to approach my love for all things woodcraft. By designing and creating amazing handmade wooden chopping boards and a range of unique handmade wooden products to last a lifetime. I have always felt such wonder from the intricacies that wooden knots and grains have to offer and I would often welcome the opportunity to study wooden furniture and gifts in all their glory. Since a young girl, I have had a passion for furniture! When I was very small, I remember admiring my grandfather’s wooden furniture with its burred walnut finish and exceptional design. This furniture captivated my attention upon every visit! Looking at it, I saw what resembled lion’s faces within the burrs of the walnut. I remember a true feeling of joy and inspiration from its sheer natural beauty. These moments are the essence of why I am carving a career in woodworking today and am living the dream of creating handmade wooden chopping boards such as iroko chopping boards, and Ash chopping boards. Not to mention many other wonderful wooden wedding presents and unusual wooden gifts.

Where It All Began…

Driven by a passion for handmade wooden chopping boards and gifts and a love of oriental furniture design, I knew The Wooden Gem was my next venture. With two beautiful boys at home, growing before my eyes, I put myself to work. I have never been one to welcome change but happiness conquers all right! So, I started collecting tools and planning my business. This was the path I knew I had to pursue. Time would pass quickly as it does with two crazy boys running about, so I decided to take the long route. Burrowing money away into the business would allow me to launch with some hope of success. Fully aware of how competitive the handmade wooden gift and handmade chopping board market can be, (not to mention how expensive wood is as my material of choice), I knew I needed to work smart to ensure my road to success.

A Welcome Relief As I Launch The Wooden Gem

 
As of February 2021, I now have an established company – The Wooden Gem Limited. With so much time, sweat, and tears having been put into the setup of the business I am pleased to say we now move on to marketing the sales of my products, including my handmade wooden chopping boards, iroko chopping boards, and handmade wooden wedding presents to name but a few. Here’s to expanding my product ranges in the years to come.

Planting Trees With The Woodland Trust

So, how can one warrant making handmade wooden chopping boards and wooden goods, fully conscious of their impact on the environment? This has been an important one for me. Since deciding on making woodwork my career path I knew choices would have to be made to rebalance what I would be sacrificing for my happiness in woodworking full time. I feel the best way for me to feel comfortable in what I am doing is to give back, in some way. So, for every order made, The Wooden Gem will be purchasing and planting a tree. The Woodland Trust will be my go-to, to ensure The Wooden Gem customers are at ease with purchasing handmade chopping boards and wooden products, for years to come.

Hand Tools Are A Girls Best Friend!

When making my handmade wooden chopping boards and other handmade wooden products, how can I reduce my impact on the environment? Well, the answer is simple! Hand tools will be used wherever possible to help the company be as ‘green’ as it can be. My trusty tenon saw will be at the forefront of any processing and rightly so as she is a little beauty!
